24 WABI SABI

24 Wabi Sabi is a residential interior project currently under development, shaped around a contemporary interpretation of the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi. Rather than treating it as a visual style, the design explores its deeper qualities through material honesty, natural textures, softened forms and spaces that feel composed without feeling overly polished.

The home is built around a restrained palette of warm neutrals, textured surfaces and natural wood. These materials continue across different rooms, creating a visual connection throughout the residence while allowing each space to develop its own character.

A Home Designed to Flow

The spatial planning creates a sense of openness without making the home feel exposed. Living, dining and kitchen areas transition naturally into one another, while subtle changes in furniture placement, curved architectural elements and built-in features give each area its own identity.

Instead of relying heavily on partitions, the design uses form to organise space. Rounded walls, arched openings and softened corners guide movement through the home and create gentler transitions between functions. The result is an interior that feels fluid and intuitive to navigate.

Natural light plays an equally important role. Large openings and sheer window treatments allow daylight to filter deep into the interiors, changing the character of textured walls, timber surfaces and neutral finishes throughout the day.

Materiality That Feels Lived In

The material palette is intentionally quiet. Textured walls bring depth without demanding attention, while timber introduces warmth across doors, cabinetry, shelving and custom furniture.

Throughout the home, clean contemporary detailing is balanced with surfaces and forms that retain a more tactile quality. Built-in niches are shaped organically rather than treated as conventional rectangular displays. Furniture introduces irregular profiles and rounded edges. Decorative elements, greenery and natural branches add another layer of imperfection and movement.

This contrast between precision and irregularity is central to the design. The architecture provides structure, while the materials and objects soften it.

Private Spaces with Their Own Rhythm

The bedrooms continue the home's restrained language but shift towards a more intimate experience. Warm timber, upholstered surfaces, soft lighting and neutral textiles create spaces designed around rest.

Storage is integrated into the architecture wherever possible. Full-height wardrobes, open display niches, dressing areas and concealed cabinetry allow practical requirements to become part of the overall composition rather than being added as separate elements.

In the primary suite, the relationship between sleeping, dressing and storage areas creates a more continuous private environment. Custom joinery maximises functionality while maintaining the visual calm established throughout the home.

The bathroom follows the same approach, combining warm neutral finishes, timber details, integrated lighting and greenery. Natural light and planted elements introduce an outdoor quality into a highly private space, creating a more restorative everyday experience.

Wabi-Sabi, Interpreted for Contemporary Living

At 24 Wabi Sabi, the design is less about recreating a particular aesthetic and more about creating a home that can become richer through use.

The neutral foundation allows personal objects, photographs, art and collected pieces to gradually become part of the interior. Natural materials bring warmth. Curved forms soften movement. Integrated greenery connects the spaces back to nature.

It is a home designed to feel complete, but never overly finished. Calm, tactile and deeply personal, with enough room for everyday life to leave its own mark.
